Artist: Duane Eddy
Year: 1958
Genre: Rock and Roll
Grade: A-
Despite the fact that the album bears one of the lamest titles in pop music history, Duane Eddy’s debut, Have ‘Twangy’ Guitar Will Travel, is somewhat of a rock ‘n’ roll tour-de-force. The deep, tremolo’d guitar foreshadows the genre’s untapped potential energy and when paired with blaring saxophones, like on “Moovin’ ‘N’ Groovin’” and “Rebel Rouser,” the rave-ups become raunchy in all the right places.
However, I tend to prefer the more relaxing, countrified tunes (like “Loving You”), which pensively showcase rock ‘n’ roll’s ability to be thought-provoking and mature.
