Artist: The Kingston Trio
Year: 1958
Genre: Folk
Grade: C+
What can possibly be expected of an Appalachian folk trio from Palo Alto? Hopefully, not much. Although The Kingston Trio were massively popular in the late ‘50s, they are nothing more than a novelty item today. The only above-average song is “Fast Freight,” the worst is probably the extremely annoying “Hard, Ain’t It Hard.” But at least their version of “Sloop John B” gives you a greater appreciation for the worst song on Pet Sounds.
After a couple listens, it’s easy to understand why folk purists hate ‘em.
