Johnny Burnette and the Rock ‘n Roll Trio

Artist: Johnny Burnette

Year: 1956

Genre: Rockabilly

Grade: A

Johnny Burnette was a gritty sumbitch, and his Rock n’ Roll Trio matched his cockeyed intensity. Fuzz guitars and yelps and screams — this is rockabilly at its rawest. As a matter of fact, Elvis ain’t got shit on “Honey Hush,” the first rock song ever made about threatening women with baseball bats. But the real chauvinism is in the simplified intensity of the arrangements: down-home rock music that feels proto-punk in some spots.
