Along with contemporaries like Cecil Taylor and Sun Ra, saxophonist Ornette Coleman pushed the very limits of what avant-garde jazz was capable of. In fact, he was practically responsible for inventing the genre. From his landmark 1959 LP The Shape of Jazz to Come to his career renaissance in the 1980s, Coleman remained one of jazz music’s greatest visionaries.
