W.C. Handy – Biography

Known as the “Father of the Blues,” W.C. Handy was born in 1873 and became one of the most influential songwriters in American history. Handy didn’t necessarily “invent” the blues, but he was the first to publish songs in the distinct Delta style. He travelled extensively throughout Mississippi and Missouri (during which he purportedly discovered the basis for his famous “St. Louis Blues” song) and documented all that he found, which helped to popularize blues music throughout the nation.
